At least 26 civilians have been killed in fighting between Somali government forces backed by African Union troops and the insurgent group, Al-Shabbab in the Somali capital early on Sunday morning.

Both insurgent and Somali government officials claimed victory over each other in the latest clashes that started in the early on Saturday.
Al-Shabbab’s Spokesman,Sheikh Ali Mohaoud Raageh claimed responsibility for the attack.

The Associated Press
reports:

A small bomb exploded outside a mosque in the Bakara Market section of Mogadishu Tuesday, killing at least one person and injuring more than four others.
The mosque is located in an area of the city dominated by al-Shabab and Hizbul Islam fighters.
Al-Shabab and other Islamic insurgent groups control much of Mogadishu along with large parts of southern and central Somalia. The groups are fighting to impose a strict form of sharia, or Islamic law, on the country.
AU peacekeepers from Uganda and Burundi are supporting the government and frequently clash with the insurgents.
War-torn Somalia has not had a stable central government since 1991.

Ali Gab, a Somali police official said that five of his fellow police officers were killed in the attack. He blamed the militant group al-Shabab for the attack.

The weak U.N.-backed Somali government is battling an Islamist insurgency. The impoverished Horn of Africa nation has not had a functioning government for nearly 20 years.

Global Times reports on the fighting between "Islamist fighters and Somali government forces backed by African Union (AU) peacekeepers":

The fighting broke out after insurgent fighters launched several rounds of mortar attack against targets of the Somali government and AU peacekeepers who responded with artillery fire on insurgent strongholds in the of the restive city.
Islamist insurgent wage almost daily fighting against Somali government forces and the nearly 5,000 AU peacekeeping troops based in Mogadishu. The latest flare-up of fighting comes days of relative calm in the Somali capital.
